Attorney General Rutledge Warns Department of Health and Human Services that It Cannot Federally Fund Abortion – SWARK Today
Proving that she is once again willing to stand up for Arkansans and their values, Attorney General Leslie Rutledge recently signed onto a letter to United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra. Rutledge along with twenty other notable Attorneys General signed the letter to demand that HHS not adopt proposed regulations that would breach Title X and illegally fund abortions in the U.S.. Title X, which was passed under the Trump administration in 2019, explicitly states that federal funding may not be be used towards elective abortions. The policy also mandates family planning clinics that recieve federal funding must be physically and financially independent from family planning clinics that provide abortions.
Should these new provisions be adopted, federal funds would be merged in direct violation of Title X. Throughout the letter, the Attorneys General remind Secretary Becerra that Title X was adopted by Congress as a measure of compromise to respect those who wish to receive abortion services without forcing taypayers who dissent from paying for them.
“I will always fight for the unborn and against taxpayer funds flowing to abortion clinics,” said Attorney General Rutledge. “As Arkansas’s chief legal officer, I have a record of successfully fighting efforts to force taxpayers to pay for abortions, including successfully defending Arkansas’s decision to bar Planned Parenthood from participating in Medicaid. And I will not stop fighting now.”
